John M. Herre, M.D., F.A.C.C.

Dr. John M. Herre received his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1973 and his medical degree from Vanderbilt University in 1977. He completed training in Internal Medicine, Cardiology and Cardiac Electrophysiology at Baylor College of Medicine in 1983. He served on the faculties of the Medical College of Virginia and the University of California-San Francisco prior to coming to Norfolk in 1988. Dr. Herre has practiced with Cardiology Consultants, Ltd. since that time, specializing in clinical cardiac electrophysiology, heart failure, and cardiac transplantation medicine.

Dr. Herre is a Past President of the Medical Staff of Sentara Hospitals-Norfolk. He has served on the Board of Directors of Lifenet since 1990, and has been its Chairman since 2004. He also served as the Region 11 Representative for the Thoracic Organ Transplant Committee of OPTN/UNOS from 2004-2006, as well as serving on their Membership and Professional Standards Committee from 2007 to the present time.

Dr. Herre is the Medical Director for the Advanced Heart Failure Program at Sentara Hospitals-Norfolk, Chief of the Division of Cardiology at Eastern Virginia Medical School, Program Director and Primary Physician of the Cardiac Transplant Program at Sentara Hospitals-Norfolk, and Medical Director of the Sentara Cardiovascular Research Institute. Dr. Herre is also Associate Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School.

Dr. Herre is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology. His areas of interest include heart failure, cardiac transplantation, cardiac electrophysiology, and research in those areas. His vast publications have included articles and abstracts regarding research in the areas of heart failure, cardiac transplantation, cardiac pacing and defibrillation, as well as new medical therapies for cardiac dysrhythmias.
