Paul D. Mahoney, M.D., F.A.C.C.

Dr. Mahoney received his undergraduate degree from Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA in 1988, and his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College in 1993. His completed his training in Internal Medicine, his fellowship in Cardiology, as well as his fellowship in Interventional Cardiology, at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. During the time of his fellowship training, he served as a clinical instructor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, as well as serving as house/staff physician at the University of Pennsylvania and the Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia. Since completing his training in 2000, Dr. Mahoney has been in practice in the Hampton Roads area with Cardiology Consultants, Ltd.

In addition to his vast research and publications, Dr. Mahoney received many awards during his time at the University of Pennsylvania, including the 1998 Astra Young Investigators’ Prize in Clinical Research, Merck American College of Cardiology Fellow Research Award, Outstanding Teacher Award 2001, CardioFellow’s Foundation Travel Award from the American Heart Association, and Rhone Poulene Rorer Cardiovascular Fellow Travel Scholarship, American College of Cardiology.

Dr. Mahoney is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, and Interventional Cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School.

Dr. Mahoney’s areas of interest include interventional cardiology, as well as having been one of the first cardiologists in the Hampton Roads area to perform closure of patent foramen ovale (PFO).
